“Politico reported that some are privately asking you still to think about getting back in the race. Is that true?”
“Yes,” he said.
“What are they saying?”
” Listen,” he said. “Same thing I said before … I’m supporting Mitt Romney and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure he wins the nomination and he’s going to be the president come Jan. 2013.”
Christie endorsed Romney and claims to want Romney to win the nomination, but there’s no way this doesn’t hurt Romney. It keeps going the talk about a late entry to the race, which reinforces that party potentates, like the unenthused Republican primary electorate, don’t like, trust or believe in the general election strength of their presidential candidates.
There may be others, but I can only come up with three possible explanations for why Christie said he was being courted to enter the presidential campaign. Maybe he’s trying to undermine Romney by reinforcing a growing perception that Romney is a general election loser, which would thus give Christie a greater likelihood of being drawn in to the race to save the GOP. Maybe Christie is so politically stupid that he doesn’t realize that saying he’s being courted to run conveys that party leaders think Romney is a horrible candidate. Or maybe actually does want Romney to win and might recognize the damage he was causing if it had been caused by someone else, but he’s so narcissistic and uncalculating that he’s incapable of not being the center of attention.
Whatever the explanation or motivation, Chris Christie just screwed Mitt Romney.
