NRA Sucking at the Teat of the Taxpayer

Last Saturday Chicago ran a buy-back program to get guns off the street. But it didn’t quite go as planned:

Sixty of the guns and several BB guns were turned in by the Champaign-based Guns Save Life. In return, the group received $6,240 in gift cards, said John Boch, president of the group.

Guns Save Life is known for the pro-gun signs the group posts along Interstate 57 between Chicago and Champaign. It also publishes a monthly gun journal.

Most of the money will go toward buying ammunition for an NRA youth camp in Bloomington. The rest will pay for four bolt-action rifles that will be given away to campers.

“This was rusty, non-firing junk that we turned in,” Boch said. “We are redirecting funds from people who would work against the private ownership of firearms to help introduce the next generation to shooting safely and responsibly.”

Todd Vandermyde, the NRA’s chief lobbyist in Illinois, said Guns Save Life turned the tables on Chicago.

“I think it’s a very good example of the resourcefulness of the pro-gun side to take the initiative to turn something used by anti-gunners into a positive,” he said.

Vandermyde said he’s heard that gun-shop owners also have used the annual gun turn-in for profit.

Vandermyde said he was told one suburban gun dealer imported junk rifles for less than $50 each and received $100 gift cards for each of them.

“It’s comical,” he said.

Yeah, it’s hilarious. People from downstate knowingly turning in junk to get $100 gift cards. I’ll bet on their way out of Chicago they complained about the people in Chicago on welfare. But they themselves are essentially welfare cheats. And they’re bragging about it.

What kind of government wants to keep citizens unarmed? A tyrannical one

How about progressives all get gun training from the NRA so we can protect ourselves from the coming Mormon takeover?

Contrary to the NRA’s schtick the past 3 years that the liberal’s are “coming for your guns” this administration has done absolutely nothing to dampen America’s love of firearm’s. And has proposed no legislation to keep guns from the hands of “red blooded patriotic” American’s who feel that they have to pack heat all day and keep one under the pillow at night. I find it hilarious that there are people who seem to be pretty easily swayed into buying a product based on their fear of the “other” who has come for your guns.

To be fair, while what you say is entirely true on a national level, Chicago is sort of important symbolically in the gun control debate. It’s had one of the most aggressive efforts to limit guns and make it harder to purchase them (and I think that may even be a Cook Co approach too). And I think one of the recent SCOTUS cases decided in favor of the NRA was about Chicago’s gun policies. But still, you’re right that there has been no effort by the Democrats in Congress or by the Obama administration to pick a fight on guns. With this SCOTUS, it’s pointless, so they’ve made the (completely reasonable) calculation that if they’re not going to change the policy, and if pushing such measures just puts pressure on their members from rural and strongly pro-gun districts, there’s almost nothing to gain but there’s a cost to be paid.

About every couple weeks I tweet that Obama still hasn’t taken my gun. Assuming he’s reelected, I think I’ll be doing those tweets for four and half more years.
